Supporting parents whose infants are at greater risk of childhood overweight
3. Strategies for steady infant growth
This training identifies three promising areas for intervention with parents of infants at higher risk of becoming overweight children. To help parents and carers manage their infants' growth and prevent a child becoming overweight, we can look at:
- Sleep
- Activity
- Feeding
Breastfeeding is the optimal way of feeding an infant and should be supported to continue even where there is a risk of the infant becoming overweight.
More details about each area are provided in the sections that follow.
Some of the evidence for these strategies can be found in the reference section at the end of this training.
