Some dyslexics believe that disclosing means that their dyslexia is no longer a problem, because people will provide support. Others disclose their dyslexia when it is necessary, for example, one dyslexic student says:
“Only if it becomes a problem, if they become aware of it I’ll tell them, but I want them to see me as, not normal, but not having any problems, so if it does become a problem I’ll tell them”
and another says:
“No, I won’t go in and announce it, I only say it if it’s a problem, I…didn’t even know I had it for years, why suddenly ….?”
Dyslexia is a name for thinking in a different way. An awareness of this different way of processing information and an understanding of how to adapt to it, is necessary in all areas of work and learning.
