Technician Allowances

Allowances paid to technicians (including trainees) for work in the Plant Houses or BSU (or similar) at weekends, public holidays and University holidays

With effect from 1 November 2024

  1. To receive the allowance detailed below, technicians must be available to work at weekends, public holidays and University holidays as set out by the Registrar’s Office, on a rotational basis, to carry out essential work in the Plant Houses or BSU (or similar). The rota will be agreed, between the technician and the line manager, as far in advance as possible.
  2. TS Levels 1-5 (plus trainee technicians) are entitled to be paid these allowances, if they participate in the rota and it is part of their contract of employment to do so.
  3. Technicians who are contractually required to participate in a rota to carry out essential work on a weekend, public holiday or University holiday will receive extra payments as detailed below.
These allowances will increase as applicable in line with the annual pay award
The amounts above are based on the November 2024 salary award
     0-2 hours worked2-3 hours worked3+ hours worked
    Weekends (per day) £59.65 £81.78 £103.93
Public holidays and University holidays (per day) £74.52 £102.23 £129.92
  4. Where a technician carries out this essential extra work on a public holiday or University holiday, time-off-in-lieu (TOIL) for the hours worked will be at 1:1 for the actual hours worked. Any TOIL must be taken by staff within the 30 day period within which it was awarded to prevent a build up of time owing. If TOIL cannot be taken during the 30 day period, managers have the option of paying this at single time, at the base hourly rate.
