Summary
This project involves the scientific characterisation of mosaic glass tesserae from Hagia Sophia, (Turkey), Torcello (Italy), Ravenna (Italy) and Turin (Italy). It forms the basis for the first comprehensive investigation of where and how the glasses were manufactured.

The stunning west wall of the basilica of St Maria Assunta, on the island of Torcello, covered in a mosaic made up of glass tesserae. It dates to the 11th, 12th, 18th and 19th centuries.
