Biography of John Lowe (1642-1722)

John Lowe was the eldest son of John Lowe of Denby (1616-1659) and his wife Catherine, daughter of Sir Arthur Pilkington, Baronet, of Stanley, Yorkshire. He had three younger brothers and three younger sisters.

He was a magistrate for the county of Derby.

John Lowe was the first member of the family known to have mined the coal seams under the family's property in Denby.

He married Mary Stead, and had:

  • Vincent Lowe, of Denby, m Theodosia dau. of John Marriott of Alscot, Gloucestershire (d 1722), and had:

  • Charles, a woollen draper in London
  • Anne, m in 1717 William Drury esquire, Alderman of Nottingham, and had:
    • William Drury, m Mary dau. of T. Hunt, and had:
      • William Drury (1753-1827), known as William Drury-Lowe from 1790
      • John Drury, m Eliza Hunter
      • Thomas Drury
      • Mary, m Samuel Shaw, and had:
        • Robert Shaw
        • William Drury Shaw
  • Priscilla, m Mr Greatorex
  • Dorothy, m in 1697 her cousin John Lowe of Park Hall, Denby

  • Title deeds, settlements, estate and legal papers relating to John Lowe's ownership of his estates are part of the Drury-Lowe papers held in Manuscripts and Special Collections at the University of Nottingham
