The sixth son of the 4th Duke of Newcastle, Lord Robert entered Christ Church College, Oxford, in 1839.
He was elected as the M.P. for North Nottinghamshire in 1852, retiring in 1865.
He was 1st Lieutenant of the Nottinghamshire Yeomanry Cavalry (Sherwood Rangers) from 1853.
