Arya Paul, MSc Stem Cell Technology and Regenerative Medicine
Arya chose Nottingham as an international student due to its excellent reputation and well-equipped lab facilities. Her rewarding postgraduate journey prepared her for a future career in both research and the commercial aspects of the field, with a strong emphasis on pursuing her passion.
What are the best things about the course?
“The best aspect of the course was the hands-on experience I gained while working in the lab, particularly at the Biodiscovery Institute. This facility offered a wide range of resources and cutting-edge technologies. This experience was particularly special for me because I had never worked in such a well-equipped setting before. It greatly boosted my confidence and knowledge in the field.”
How did you choose your research area?
“My bachelor's degree was in zoology, and I wanted to pursue a field related to the life sciences but not necessarily focused on animals. Stem cell technology and regenerative medicine caught my attention due to its potential in the future of medicine, and I wanted to be a part of that exciting journey.”
What has been the most rewarding part of your postgraduate studies?
“The most rewarding part of my postgraduate studies was overcoming the challenges, both academically and personally. Being away from home and adapting to a new environment was tough, but I persisted and successfully graduated. The feeling of achieving what I set out to do despite the difficulties is the most rewarding aspect for me.”
How has the support on offer been?
“I received help from many staff members, but who truly inspired and guided me was one of the PhD students assigned to be my supervisor. She served as a mentor and offered invaluable support in experimental planning and execution. She provided me with guidance on experimental planning, suggesting alternative approaches and methods. This guidance was significant in shaping the direction of my projects and was highly beneficial to my studies.”
“I was specifically interested in the field of stem cell technology and regenerative medicine. When I was researching programmes, I found that Nottingham had an excellent reputation and offered the longest-running course in this subject area.”
What does ‘success’ look like for you?
“Success, for me, means finding a job that aligns with my passion and allows me to work in a field I love. I want to wake up every day and enjoy what I do, and that's what I consider a successful career.”
“I would highly recommend this course to students interested in stem cell technology or related fields in medicine. The University of Nottingham provides exceptional support and resources, including access to advanced lab facilities.”
What does the future hold?
“I have a keen interest in both research and the commercial aspects of my field. This course provided me with a great experience, allowing me to explore both areas. Stem cell technology is an emerging field with great potential in pharmaceutical industries and academia. I believe my degree has equipped me with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in these career paths.”
