Peer mentoring

Peer Mentors

The Peer Mentoring scheme was designed by the students and is run by the students. It is a way of helping you to settle into your first year and gives you the opportunity to meet other students on the course.

 Your mentor will:

  • Provide you with an early sense of belonging to your course.
  • Help you to orient yourself physically and electronically in the university landscape.
  • Introduce you to the skills and information you need to settle into university life.
  • Provide you with advice and guidance based on their own experience.
  • Be a friendly face around campus.
  • Somewhere you can always go to ask questions (they might not always know the answer but will know where to point you if they do not know)

Peer Mentors know what it is like to be a new student at Nottingham and they can help you through the process by sharing some of their own experiences. You will be put into small groups with a pair of mentors from higher years.

You will them meet your mentor group in the first week to get to know them and will then meet with them every other week during the first semester while you settling into university life to discuss key milestones and anything else that you want to discuss.

You will meet up again at the beginning of semester two and will have a couple of set meeting with them later on to discuss interim results and subjects and modules for the next year.

What can your mentor help you with?

You mentor can help you with a range of issues including:

  • Keeping up with your lectures and classes

  • Getting involved in university life

  • Dealing with homesickness

  • Managing in lab classes and workshops

  • Coping with your assignments

  • What to expect from your exams

  • Opportunities like study abroad and placements

  • Finding somewhere to live in your second year

  • Choosing your second year stream and modules

  • Ideas for what to do when you finish

Mentors are usually available to chat to online before the start of the course in September. Details about this availability is published on the welcome pages and sent around in the welcome email.
