I am interested in origins and causes, prevention and treatment of surgical infection. In particular, my group focuses on those operations that involve use of biomaterials, and these include hip or knee replacements, spine surgery, neurosurgery and urology.
We are investigating preparation of the patient's skin for operation and better diagnosis of spine infections. We have also developed several antimicrobial devices that avoid infection by killing any bacteria that reach them. Some of these are already in use in NHS hospitals and other countries, while others are in development or moving towards use in patients.
We have expertise in clinical surgical infection, and the scientific aspects such as specialist microbiology (including biofilm infections) and biomaterials such as silicone catheters and metal implants.
Professor Bayston has previously given interviews for BBC Radio and TV, and for press and is interested in external consultancy and opportunities for research collaboration.
