The Centre for Healthcare Technologies (CHT), a joint venture between the University of Nottingham and Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, has been recognised with a prestigious national award in this year’s NHS England Healthcare Science Awards ceremony.
The Developing Partnerships to Improve Outcomes Award, celebrates the team’s efforts in providing a thriving ecosystem for innovative scientific and clinical research which speeds up the identification and dissemination of healthcare innovations that benefits patients. These partnerships are crucial as they help to transform services, improve outcomes and reduce costs.
Professor Dan Clark, Head of Clinical Engineering at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and CHT’s Co-Director and Lead for Services commented, “Society is facing major healthcare challenges with an ageing population and a rapid increase in chronic diseases. Innovative technologies will play a crucial role in addressing these challenges. Successfully developing new technology and getting it adopted is more than just good science and engineering – it requires an understanding of the translation pathway and having the partnerships in place to navigate this difficult path. The Centre for Healthcare Technologies was established to do just that and we are delighted that this achievement has been recognised with the 2018 Healthcare Science Award for Developing Partnerships.

Professor Stephen Morgan, Professor of Biomedical Engineering and CHT’s Co-Director Lead for Research said, “The Centre for Healthcare Technologies has facilitated new collaborations between clinicians and academics and has supported the translation of new devices into healthcare. About the Centre for Healthcare Technologies
CHT was established in 2016 as a leading centre of excellence for medical innovation and product development. Since its inception, the Centre has established a wide range of new partnerships between academia, clinicians and industry. To date, it has over 100 academics drawn from more than 30 research groups, who develop and support an extensive range of medical technology projects which are designed to address major health and wellbeing issues.
The Centre works with its stakeholders to address major healthcare challenges by using technology to provide long-term strategic value to UK industry. The Centre’s scientists, engineers and clinicians support innovators through domestic and international regulatory processes, evaluate product cost-effectiveness, hone better designs and carry out user engagement studies.
