Derek Robert McAuley, Professor of Digital Economy in the School of Computer Science at the University of Nottingham, has played a key role in an independent review of digital competition in the UK, published today Wednesday 13 March 2019.

The review, set up in August last year, says tech giants have become increasingly dominant and ministers must open the market up to increase consumer choice and give people greater control over their data.

Professor McAuley, who is also Director of Horizon Digital Economy Research at the University of Nottingham, said: “It is clear in our review that well-functioning competitive digital markets have the potential to develop new solutions and increased choice for consumers, where privacy and quality of service can be differentiating factors. Sadly we are not in this position today. The 20 recommendations we make are designed to address the many different facets of the problem. In particular in recommending data mobility, open and interoperable standards we are invoking the original open spirit of the internet, that has made it such a successful platform for innovation.”
