Starling’s Forces

So we can now see how these forces work in opposition to each other. Hydrostatic pressure pushes water out of the capillary, while oncotic pressure pulls it back in. Each of these pressures can be measured. The difference between the measured pressures decides whether water leaves the capillary, or is pulled back in to it. The fluid pushed out of the capillary wall by hydrostatic pressure is called filtrate.
