Description

Please join the editors and contributors for an online launch of the book 'Contemporary Queer Chinese Art' (coedited by Hongwei Bao, Diyi Mergenthaler and Jamie J. Zhao, Bloomsbury, forthcoming in June 2023). The event features:

  • Brian Curtin discussing how curatorial practices can be queered in an Asian context;
  • Gandalf Bohan Li exploring how vulnerability can be used as a communication device in kinbaku;
  • Jiete Li and Claire Ruo Fang Ping talking about how to organise women’s arts festivals in Beijing and other parts of China during the pandemic;
  • Li Xinmo and Shi Tou discussing their feminist art practice and how they queer feminist art;
  • Xiyadie introducing how to infuse queer themes in traditional art forms;
  • Burong Zeng reflecting on how neurodiversity inspires her theatre and art practices;
  • And more.

You will also hear about how to contribute to the Bloomsbury ‘Queering China: Transnational Genders and Sexualities’ book series.

This event will be held on Zoom. It is a bilingual event in which speakers can choose to speak English or Mandarin Chinese. (No translation will be provided due to the lack of resources. Sorry.) Event running order (subject to change):

  • Co-editors’ introduction of the book and the book series (in English and Mandarin)
  • Panel 1 (in Mandarin): Li Xinmo, Shi Tou and Xiyadie, Followed by Q&A in Mandarin
  • Panel 2 (in English): Brian Curtin, Gandalf Bohan Li, Jiete Li and Claire Ruo Fang Ping, Burong Zeng, Followed by Q&A in English
