London addresses of India-based delegates

Delegates were given an accommodation allowance and left to find their own lodgings. This further extended the disparities between the richer delegates, many of them the Maharajahs and other rulers of the Princely States, and the delegates from British India, many of whom were self-employed. Of the former, suites both for rulers and staff were taken in exclusive hotels such as the Carlton and Savoy. For the latter, the government provided subsidised lodgings at the India Social Centre in Mayfair, while others took apartments with self-catering facilities, often at some distance from St James’s. While 96 delegates attended the first session and 108 the second, the third session in 1932 attracted only 46 delegates.
