On Saturday, the 26th of April 2014, the tenth annual Midlands Viking Symposium took place at the Barber Institute in Birmingham, with 80 participants. The Symposium was founded by Dr Christina Lee in 2005, when the first one took place in Nottingham. Christina was a speaker at this year's anniversary event, and was also presented with flowers in recognition of her founding role in this long-standing and successful initiative. Other speakers included Dr Chris Callow and Bernadette McCooey from the University of Birmingham, Dr Philip Shaw from the University of Leicester, and visiting speakers Cat Jarman from the University of Bristol, Dr Slavica Rankovic from Leeds and Dr Gareth Williams from the British Museum. The full programme can be seen by following the link above.
The Midlands Viking Symposium, an event designed to bring together academics and enthusiasts in Viking Studies, has from its inception been a collaborative venture between Birmingham, Leicester and Nottingham, anticipating more recent cooperations such as the Midlands3Cities Doctoral Training Partnership. Our collaboration will continue beyond its first decade, with the next Symposium taking place in Leicester on the 25th of April 2015.
