The Centre for the Study of the Viking Age is pleased to welcome a new member, Dr Martin Findell, recently appointed Assistant Professor of Historical Linguistics in the School of English.
Martin studied first at the University of Sheffield, getting a BA in English Language with Linguistics and an MA in Historical Language Studies. He then did his PhD here at Nottingham, on Vocalism in the Continental Runic Inscriptions (2010). This was subsequently expanded and published as Phonological Evidence from the Continental Runic Inscriptions by de Gruyter in 2012.
For the last few years Martin has been working on The Impact of Diasporas on the Making of Britain: evidence, memories, inventions project based at the University of Leicester, where his topic has been 'Linguistic Variation in Early Anglo-Saxon England', largely using runic evidence. In 2014, the British Museum Press published Martin's introductory book on Runes.
At Nottingham, Martin will be teaching and researching in various areas of historical language study as well as runology. He also has an interest in medievalism.
