Publishing using WS_FTP
A more secure alternative to WS_FTP is SSH Secure Shell
for workstations. You can download
it from IS.

When your unix account has been set up to serve web pages (see
publishing) you will need software to upload
(copy) your pages and any images to the web server. If you write
your pages in HTML, you can use a file transfer program like WS_FTP
to publish your pages, but you need to enter some information about
the web server that you want to publish to. To set up WS_FTP to
publish to the University's web server, read the instructions below
or see a demo
of this process.
- Open WS_FTP, and the Session Properties dialogue box should
appear (if it does not appear, click on Connect).
- Click on New to set up a new session profile.
- In the Profile name: box type a name for your
session - use something that will remind you of the web site you
are working on.
- In the Host Name/Address: box, type ftp.nottingham.ac.uk
- In the User ID: box, type your username.
- Click on the Startup tab.
- In the Initial Remote Host Directory: box, type
/home/yourusername/public_html
replace yourusername with your own username
- In the Initial Local Directory: box type the path
to where your web pages are on your computer (or the network).
- Click on Apply (or Save depending
on the version of WS_FTP you are using)
- Click on Cancel to finish, or OK to connect
Now you can use the Connect button to connect to the web server,
and the arrow buttons to publish selected pages. Further reference
materials for using WS_FTP are also available.
