Publishing your pages to the web

Once you have written your web pages on your own computer, you will need to copy (or upload) them to the University's web server. The web server is a computer that has software installed to allow it to serve up web pages to people browsing the web. By copying your web pages to the web server, you are making your pages available to people browsing the web. This process is often referred to as publishing your web pages.

step 1

Getting a username
You will need an account (a username and password) for the University's unix service to be able to publish pages to the web server. It is recommended that you have a username and password set up specifically for this purpose - contact your Departmental IT Rep to have an account created for you (IS maintain a list of current reps).

step 2

Preparing your new account for publishing
A newly created account (i.e. when you receive a new username and password) will need setting up to serve web pages. You will need to log into the Unix service using your new username and password) and run a program called webinit which will make the necessary adjustments for you. Read instructions or see a demo of this process.

step 3

Publishing your pages
When your account has been set up to serve web pages you will need software to upload (copy) your pages and any images to the web server. If you write your pages in HTML you may want to use a file transfer program like WS_FTP which is designed to copy files from one computer to another. If you use Dreamweaver to write your pages, you can use Dreamweaver's built in publishing facility instead.

a. Using Dreamweaver
When you define a site in Dreamweaver (see demo), or edit the site definition, you also need to enter information about the web server that you want to publish to (read instructions or see a demo). Then you can publish your pages to the web server (see demo).

b. Using WS_FTP
You can use WS_FTP or another file transfer program to copy files from your computer to the web server. First you will need to specify details about the web server and the locations of the files on your own computer. Read instructions or see a demo of this process. Further reference materials on using WS_FTP to publish are also available.

good practice note

As good practice, we would recommend editing your pages on your own computer and then checking them in the web browser, before publishing them to the web server and checking them again as the live version.
