Passion

Growing up, I witnessed first-hand the impact of hardship on individuals and families. This experience fostered a strong sense of empathy and commitment in me to make a difference. I believe everyone deserves support, understanding and opportunities to thrive.

I chose to study for my master’s at the University of Nottingham because of its diversity and inclusivity, which aligns with my values. The support for research and placements across various social work settings by the university stood out to me, as I wanted a programme that provides both theoretical and hands-on experience.

My favourite module is Social Work Theories, Models and Methods because it provided me with the knowledge and tools to understand and approach human behaviours and social issues effectively. I got to learn how theories like systems theory, crisis intervention and strength-based approaches are applied to promote positive change in people’s lives.

Placements

I did my first placement at a mental health service, which was impactful for my learning and growth as a social work student. This placement experience has deepened my understanding of mental health dynamics and given me practical insight into applying theory to real-life situations. During this placement, I had the opportunity to teach psychoeducation to adults dealing with mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, self-harm and suicide ideation. Engaging with the service users on a personal level allowed me to build trust and develop my communication skills, which has been invaluable now that I’m back in the classroom.

Developing my communication skills allows me to connect with the service users and assess their needs and situations through different social work theories and frameworks. I have also strengthened my ability to critically reflect on my actions and decisions to evaluate and learn from my experiences. These skills have helped me to become more confident and prepared to handle complex and challenging situations.

Support

The university provides lots of support. I have a personal tutor for guidance both academically and personally. There are also skills days to enhance practical learning, extensive library resources, a mental well-being support service, and a whole lot more.

Advice

Enjoy the process. Stay open to learning from every experience and be open to receiving constructive criticism. You are about to go on the most challenging yet rewarding journey of your life.

Connecting with my course mates has been the best thing about my university experience so far. We come from different countries and backgrounds and we all bring unique experiences and perspectives, thereby creating a supportive learning environment that has expanded my understanding of social work. My time at Nottingham has been amazing, not only because of the quality of education but also the inclusive community that makes me feel safe and supported.
