Mechanisms for visualising information, enabling simpler and more immediate representations of complex underlying data, are of interest to teachers and learners alike in Higher Education. The projects outlined here show just some of the ways in which modelling and simulation are being used in the University to link a sense of fun and adventure with the achievement of appropriate learning objectives.
The technology helps bring 3D structures to life and makes them real for the students
Dr Fergus Doherty is a lecturer in Biomedical sciences. Here he talks about how new modelling software allowed him to help students deepen their understanding of the dimensions of proteins, molecules, and larger anatomical strucutres .
Dr Mike Davey is a Research Officer in the Plant and Crop Sciences Dvision at Sutton Bonington campus. This article describes the impact of a new microscope with a digital camera facility on the training of PhD students and research visitors.
Dr Ed Lester looks at how the innovative development and deployment of visual simulations and 3D computer games is helping engineering students develop vital team-working skills.
Dr Gary Priestnall is an Associate Professor in the School of Geography. Here he describes how interactive learning objects can be used to deepen the understanding of spatial and logic skills .
