Parishes in Nottinghamshire until 1842

Up to the mid-19th century, the ecclesiastical jurisdictions within Nottinghamshire were quite complex. The ancient Archdeaconry of Nottingham, in the Diocese of York, was almost coterminous with the county, but included the parishes of Rossington and Finningley which were later transferred to Yorkshire. It also included places like Bawtry and Austerfield, which had always been in Yorkshire but which were chapelries of the parish church of Blyth in Nottinghamshire.

The Archdeaconry consisted of four deaneries: Nottingham, Bingham, Newark and Retford. Outside the jurisdiction of the Archdeaconry were a number of parishes which were attached to the Peculiar of Southwell. In addition, a few parishes reported to the Dean and Chapter of York, and some others were entirely responsible for their own ecclesiastical business, like Kinoulton. Some places were 'extra-parochial', meaning they were not in any parish, and their inhabitants had to attend neighbouring churches.

This situation lasted until 1841-2, when the parishes formerly under Peculiar jurisdiction were incorporated into the Archdeaconry of Nottingham.

Parishes in this table are shown in capital letters. Chapelries were places which had church buildings of their own, but came under the jurisdiction of a mother church in another parish. People living in townships and hamlets had to travel to their parish church to worship, marry, baptise their children and bury their dead.

The place names used are standard forms taken from Bartholomew's Survey Gazetteer of the British Isles, 1914 edition.
