University Related Archives

Below is a guide to material relating to the University College, Nottingham or the University of Nottingham which is not contained in the main university collections:

Printed Material

Printed material is also present in the University archives, but more complete series of publications such as the University Calendar, Annual Reports, departmental prospectuses and student publications are held in the University of Nottingham Special Collection. This material can be searched for using the library catalogue NUSearch.

Various incarnations of the university student magazine are housed in the University of Nottingham Special Collection. The Gong, produced and published by students, was variously known as the Magazine of the Nottingham University College, The Nottingham University College Chronicle, Nottingham University Arts Magazine and the Arts Magazine of Nottingham University. We have issues for the following years: 1895-1903, 1909, 1911-1976, 1994/95. The Gongster, was set up as a rival to The Gong and there is almost a complete run (with the occasional missing issue), from its inception in 1939 to its closure in 1978. The Gongster was superseded by a new student magazine, Bias, which ran from 1978-1984. The complete run of this magazine is held in the University of Nottingham Special Collection. The current student magazine, Impact, was established in 1985 and copies are held from 1985 to the present day.

There have been three student magazines for the Midland Agricultural College, now the School of Biosciences, University of Nottingham: The Midland Agricultural and Dairy College Magazine, 1911-1926, The Kingstonian, 1927-1944, and Agrimag, 1947-. A complete run of these magazines is held in the University of Nottingham Special Collection.

Papers of former staff and students

Papers of the Students' Union and various other student and staff societies are also held. They include minutes, correspondence, membership registers and photographs. The professional and personal papers of several former members of staff are also present in our collections, as well as lecture notes, personal papers and memorabilia relating to the time at Nottingham of former students. Many of these are classified as Personal papers rather than University archives.
