There are often opportunities for research collaboration which can reduce costs by opening up other sources of funding.

Environmental sustainability statement

The Virtual & Immersive Production Studio put environmental sustainability at the heart of our work, driving innovation and seeking out best practice to ensure the building, the equipment, and the activities we support are all in tune with our values and intention to be a leader in the development of green standards for immersive experience design.

We’re fully committed to supporting the University of Nottingham’s sustainability initiatives which are at the core of the University’s Strategy.

The Studio

The very extension of the life-span of a specialist studio building maximises the value of the carbon spent in creating the facility 40 years ago - this is a significant sustainability gain for us. VIP Studio Director, Professor Helen Kennedy has been in consultation with Tom Henderson of Vectar Project and Vectar Sets in Manchester since 2020 to seek guidance on sustainable virtual and immersive production. Vectar Project are the UK’s first carbon neutral film and post-production studio. The outcomes of that consultation have informed our approach in the establishment of current facilities and will continue to underpin our sustainability ambitions. We will adhere to Albert existing and future guidelines in all creative production activities and will be drawing on UoN low carbon research expertise to monitor and evaluate the carbon neutrality gains of the measures and practices that we introduce.

Reusability

We aim to reduce our carbon footprint as much as possible and are always seeking ways to reduce this. We encourage the sharing of equipment such as headsets, holograms and microphones. These are designed to be loaned out to projects, for example for location work or exhibitions. Not only does this reduce the financial pressure on partners to buy consumables for their projects, it also reduces the number of devices required to produce new work through resource sharing.

We also use the redistribution of goods scheme WarpIt as this decreases the need to purchase new items which reduces further resource use.
