The School of Computer Science (CS) at the University of Nottingham was established 35 years ago and is firmly established as an international centre for excellence in CS research and teaching.

As a top 20 UK Computer Science department (based on both Research Quality and ‘Power’ in the most recent UK government research excellence assessment) and ranked 114th (18th in the UK) of more than 1,000 universities in the QS World University Rankings, we take particular pride in addressing a broad range of real-world problems, from cyber security, scheduling of planes at London Heathrow to exploring the potential benefits and risks of the highly data-centric world we live in. In many of these cases, scientific advances require an interdisciplinary approach, and we work closely with some of the best researchers across the world – including many here at the University of Nottingham.

We provide a friendly, modern and supportive teaching environment, which consistently leads to a high proportion of our students gaining excellent degree results. We attract high quality, highly motivated students from around the world, including regular cohorts from our two overseas Schools, in China and Malaysia. We are currently ranked in the top twenty universities in the UK (QS World University Rankings 2023), and our students voted us the the best School in the Faculty of Science in 2021. We are proud of the facilities that we provide to staff and students. The School continues to invest in keeping its estate up to date and we currently provide excellent staff offices, 24-hour access to the building, and modern well-equipped laboratories for both research and teaching. The School holds an Athena SWAN Bronze award and the University holds TEF Gold.

We encourage our academics to acquire funding from all sources, including UK Research Councils, industry, charities and EU framework programmes with support from a talented team of research development professionals. The School is a stand-alone budgetary unit within the Faculty of Science, and operates a highly devolved financial model, empowering its academic staff to directly manage their own research portfolios. We provide devolved research accounts to academics based on the number of PhD students they supervise and the research funding they attract, allowing individuals to exercise their own discretion on items such as personal research equipment, conference travel for themselves and their team, and miscellaneous consumables. This model provides the flexibility for individuals to thrive, with personal autonomy to develop their careers as they wish.

We believe in supporting our staff in order for them - and us - to succeed, we offer lightened teaching workloads, preferential access to school PhD scholarships, and personal mentoring support to new staff.

If you feel Computer Science at Nottingham could be for you, we are looking forward to receiving your application.
