An interdisciplinary and comparative conference

The aim of this 4-day, on-line conference is to bring together scholars from a range of disciplines, backgrounds and societies to explore the fundamental question: how has 'foreign occupation' (broadly defined) influenced cultural expression and cultural production across the world? With speakers from four continents and a range of disciplinary backgrounds, this conference will address this question from the perspective of visual cultures, literature, music, art and space. Adopting a broadly comparative and interdisciplinary approach, the papers that will be presented cover various historical and on-going cases of foreign occupation in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, the Pacific and other regions.

Conference themes include:

  • The development of visual, musical, auditory, literary, performative and architectural cultures under foreign occupation

  • Censorship and control of cultural expression under foreign occupation, and responses to such control

  • Gender and race in cultural expression and cultural production under occupation

  • The control and re-ordering  of space under occupation

Keynote addresses will be given by Professor Ahmad H. Sa'di (Ben-Gurion University) and Professor Christine de Matos (University of Notre Dame, Sydney)

Event format

The conference will take place on Microsoft Teams (a video chat and conferencing platform). This is due to the on-going Covid-19 pandemic which has made it impossible to hold an 'in person' event in early 2021.

Due to the challenge of organising a conference involving speakers from all over the world, conference panels will be held according to the location of speakers involved. Panels will be spread out across the 4 days of the conference. Panel sessions will also be recorded so that registered delegates can access panel sessions for a short period during and following the conference.

If you would like to join the conference please register for your spot via the link on this page. After you have registered, you will be sent an email invitation to the Microsoft Teams event platform for the conference. Registration is free, but necessary – if you do not register, you will not be able to join the conference.

Registration will close on Monday, April 12, 2021.
