Academic Promotions Committees

Level 7

Terms of Reference

  • Within the guidelines of the Academic Promotions Procedure determine promotions to Level 7 within the Research and Teaching Job Family as well as the award of appropriate titles.

Main Activities

  • Consider all applications for promotion to Level 7, determining which candidates have a prima facie case.
  • Relevant Faculty Pro-Vice-Chancellor appoints appropriate external advisers for each candidate.
  • Determine which candidates should be promoted.
  • Determine where required, the appropriate title for all staff promoted to Level 7.
  • Review data trends associated with ED&I considerations and agree any actions required, intended to remove any potential disadvantage to protected groups.*

Level 6

Terms of Reference

  • Determine where required, the appropriate title for all staff promoted to Level 6.

Levels 4(a) - 4 and 5

Terms of Reference

  • Within the guidelines of the Research and Teaching Promotions Procedure determine promotions to Levels 4 and 5 within the Research and Teaching Job Family as well as the award of appropriate titles.  Provide annual reports, including ED&I Data to the University Promotions Committee.

Main Activities

  • Consider all applications for promotion to Level 4 and 5, determining which candidates will be promoted.
  • Determine where required, the appropriate title for all other staff promoted to Level 4 or 5.
  • Report back to University Promotions Committee annually on promotion outcomes, unsuccessful applications, ED&I data and data trends, alongside any promotion training/engagement and approaches in encouraging promotion for eligible staff at a Faculty and School level.

* FPVCs may wish to exercise discretion and flexibility as to membership of the committee, including considering equality and diversity of its composition.  All members should attend the following courses prior to the committee meeting: 

  • Embracing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Nottingham
  • Interview Skills for Chair and Panel Members

The DVC/Director of HR will be responsible for approving the final constitution of the Faculty Committee.
