At 3 years a typical concentration span is about 10 minutes and they begin to solve problems by themselves. Their vocabulary is 500 to 1000 words. A lot of their questions now start with why. They can match 2 or 3 primary colours and will sort objects into categories, for example animals, vehicles, food. Most children will know not only their own name, but also their sex and sometimes their age.

They begin to understand time; "I go to nursery after breakfast" or "it's one sleep until my party". Their drawing is becoming more complex, for example they will draw a man with a head and sometimes legs. They will often talk to themselves during painting or drawing and change their mind about what the drawing is all about as they go along.
