Ivan is 48 and works full time as an electrician. He was devastated after his wife's death, but threw himself into work and looked after Bonnie. They always went to support their home football team on a Saturday, and got fish and chips on the way home. He had good help from neighbours and his brother and sister in law did live nearby until his brother's early retirement due to ill health. Ivan was very pleased when Bonnie and Saba became friends, but finds it hard to know how to react to her mood swings. He misses their old companionship.

Keeley works as a receptionist. She is 23 and lives at home, which is just up the road from Ivan and Bonnie. She finished University a couple of years ago. The families know each other and Keeley's mother, who is a nurse, offered advice during Bonnie's mother's illness. Keeley supports the local football team, likes decorating and gets on well with Bonnie. Both family and friends were concerned about the age difference between Keeley and Ivan, but her parents have accepted the situation.

Bonnie is 11. She went to a local primary school who were very supportive during her Mum's illness and death. She preferred active games and spent most of playtimes with the boys. In her last year at primary she developed a friendship with a new girl, Saba, which became quite intense. She was very upset when Saba moved to a different school, after her parents relocated. Over the last year Bonnie has become more emotional and doesn't talk to her Dad as much.
