Initiating a conversation (poor example)
Poor Example | Good Example
Although it seems simple, initiating a conversation can be a difficult task and when done poorly can minimise the chance of building a therapeutic relationship.
Click on the following scene to explore poor use of communication when initiating a conversation.
Learning Points:
- The nurse assumed that because the child or young person had stated she was "okay", that no further discussion was required. However, the nurse did not take into account the child or young person's body language which suggested she did not feel "okay".
- Communication was likely to be less effective as a result of the nurse not physically lowering herself to the child or young person's level.
- The nurse's body language and pace of speech gave the impression that she was preoccupied and not very interested.
