Click on the following scene to show how this could have been handled more effectively.
Learning Points:
- The nurse responded in a calm, non-judgemental manner without making assumptions and jumping to conclusions. This helped the child or young person feel relaxed and not feel judged about what she was feeling and communicating.
- The nurse used a rating scale to try and determine the severity of the situation. This was also useful as a tool to explore how they might work together to help manage and reduce the severity of the child or young person's feelings.
- The nurse asked the young person how she had coped when she had felt like this in the past. Through doing this the nurse is able to identify opportunities for the child or young person and nurse to work together to effectively manage the situation.
