An unconscious person is hard to rouse or can't be made aware of his or her surroundings. Unconsciousness is caused by illness, injury or emotional shock. Different levels and causes of unconsciousness exist and the patient will require a primary and secondary survey. If the patient requires emergency intervention they will need to be in the correct position.

Even in an emergency situation it would be better to use a slide sheet to slide the patient down the bed.
