RLO: Dyslexia and workplace learning

Impact on mentors

Mentors who know that their student is dyslexic may be able to provide better support. Mentoring dyslexic students can be enjoyable, if the mentor can see what they are doing is having an effect. However, it can also be time-consuming and a cause of stress.

Ginny, a mentor, did not get any support or help from her ward manager, who suggested that it was Ginny’s fault that the student was experiencing difficulties. This was not made easier by the fact that it was Ginny’s first student, and she was newly qualified. The student said that no-one else had picked it up, which made Ginny doubt herself and her own abilities. It undermined her confidence and she felt guilty about what happened, because she thought she should have done more in flagging up the fact that she was a ‘problem student’, for her next placement.
