Support and strategies

Dyslexic students would like mentors to have better understanding of dyslexia. They would like mentors to realise that not all dyslexics are the same, and to treat them as individuals. Some don’t want too much support, as it is not available once qualified, and others do not want any visible support because of not wanting to feel different. Mentors need to be aware that some students may have dyslexia, but not have disclosed. Thus being aware of the signs of dyslexia may be helpful.

Dyslexic students may not need any more support than other students, but the support required may be different and needs to be flexible, depending on the students’ needs. Students will have difficulties with certain aspects of clinical placement, in the same way as non dyslexic students, but most will eventually learn to deal with them, with the right support.

Strategies for dealing with clinical placement tasks will vary according to the individual and may need to be learned. Students may need help in applying adaptive strategies used in one setting to another setting. With practice, adaptive strategies should improve. Some of these strategies could apply to all students.
