About Injury, Recovery and Inflammation Sciences

We are a multi-disciplinary team of staff and students spanning areas of Anaesthesia & Critical Care; Metabolism, Ageing & Physiology; Rheumatology; Rehabilitation & Ageing; Sports & Exercise Medicine and Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery. We also host the Musculoskeletal, Surgery, Inflammation & Recovery NIHR BRC theme and the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration for East Midlands.

Our research and teaching focus on maximising function, safety and independence across the lifespan. Our work encompasses sportspeople, including elite athletes, and extends to age-related changes in muscle and physical function, trauma, recovery, rehabilitation and peri-operative medicine.

We cover the full spectrum of research from bench-based, through physiological research in healthy subjects and computational modelling, to clinical trials in real-world patient populations, big data research and data synthesis, applied health services and implementation research. We are patient- and person-centred in our research approaches. Delivering real-word impact is our primary goal.

We are located at the Queen’s Medical Centre and City Hospital in Nottingham, and at the Royal Derby Hospital.
