On Tuesday 6th March, Dr Chris Parmenter and the nmRC featured in a segment on Notts TV about the world's smallest ice etchings. To congratulate the GB team on their performance at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, Chris had etched a message onto ice. This had piqued the interest of Notts TV and they came to the nmRC to find out more.
Chris demonstrated the techniques involved in etching using an ion beam on the FEI Quanta200 3D FIB/SEM. For the Notts TV team, he etched their logo onto ice, and it was half the width of a human hair. He explained more about what the nmRC does and highlighted some other etching that has been done by the nmRC, for example, the world's smallest periodic table on a human hair, and a 90th birthday message to the Queen on a corgi hair.
