Dr Xuanli Luo in the Top 50 Women in Engineering Award (WE50) for 2020.

Judged by a panel of industry experts, the Top 50 Women in Engineering Awards (WE50) programme seeks to recognise the wealth of female talent within engineering who have made a significant contribution to sustainability. Winning nominees for 2020 were required to provide evidence of their successful support of UNESCO’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) or the Net Zero Carbon Programme.

Sustainable hydrogen, producing only water as a waste product, could offer credible decarbonisation solutions for heat, power, industry and transport. A major barrier to exploitation of hydrogen in energy applications especially vehicles is the lack of a safe, efficient and cost-effective storage system for the lightest gas in our universe.

Dr Xuanli Luo is a Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellow in the Advanced Materials Research Group (AMRG). Her current research project is searching for a new way to store hydrogen based on nano-quasicrystals to enable room temperature hydrogen storage suitable for use in vehicles.

Xuanli started her hydrogen research journey in 2009 as a PhD student in the AMRG. She said, ”There are excellent female engineers and students around me in Engineering who work hard to improve our living environment. The WE50 awards are for all the women engineers who dedicate themselves to a sustainable future for our society. I am very proud of being part of them.”
