Morgan Alexander has been awarded the Rivière Prize at the latest UK Surface Analysis Forum (UKSAF) meeting, held at the University of Surrey on 3rd July 2024.

The citation:

"Professor Morgan Alexander has pioneered biomaterial discovery using advanced surface chemical analysis methods. He attended UKSAF meetings since starting as a surface analyst in the 1990’s. In those early years, his focus was on adhesives and coatings, particularly plasma polymers and he published seminal papers which improved accuracy and consistency of fitting to various core levels in XPS. This had significant impact and continue to be well used by the community.

After joining the School of Pharmacy Science at the University of Nottingham, he initiated a revolutionary programme of work to perform high throughput surface analysis on arrays of different polymers to discover new biomaterials and understand the fundamental mechanisms between surface chemistry and biological response. This powerful combinatorial approach led to the discovery of new materials to resist biological attachment, expand pluripotent cells and better understand the immune response to biomaterials.

Professor Alexander is always quick to adopt new methods and techniques: this is evident by his early adoption of OrbiSIMS and its application to complex biological questions. He has been a consistent presence at UKSAF and other surface analysis meetings throughout his career and is always ready to help, mentor and debate with other surface analysts. In light of his achievements, he has been deemed a worthy recipient of the Rivière Prize."
