Professor Morgan Alexander has been awarded £1.2m for a project aiming to understand the body’s response to implanted devices and why they fail, focusing on glucose sensors used to manage Type 1 diabetes.

The project will be a multidisciplinary effort to develop a real-time monitoring approach to non-invasively observe the evolution of the body’s response to implanted devices. This will aide the development of new implant designs to reduce medical device associated inflammation and infection. The proposed approach will enable ready monitoring of inflammatory responses to implanted materials in any clinic or research lab, without the need for advanced imaging equipment.

The news has been included in a University of Nottingham press release article.
