Automatic image analysis is now a key enabling tool within the biological sciences. Many biologists have, however, acquired and applied image analysis tools only to obtain disappointing results. In most cases this is because the tools and methods chosen, while performing the desired function (image segmentation, motion analysis, etc), were designed to operate on images different to those generated in the laboratory.
This project builds on our previously successful Summer Schools on Image Analysis Methods for Biologists. It will develop and deliver a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on image analysis aimed at postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers in the biological sciences. The course will provide both i) the understanding of image acquisition, processing and analysis methods needed to allow biologists to make best use of the available techniques and ii) practical experience of existing image analysis tools.
