Description

The SPLAS Cine Club starts up again on Monday 13th February, with its first film of 2023 and the first Portuguese-language film of the series. Capitães da Areia (Cecília Amado, 2011) is a Brazilian film that follows the life and adventures of a group of abandoned street kids in 1950s Salvador, Bahia. This coming-of-age odyssey portrays stories of wasted youth whilst capturing love, tenderness and a desperate desire to belong to a family - and society. You can expect dreams, struggles, sex, death, and freedom - and of course, popcorn.

Cine Club is run by staff based in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies (SPLAS). This month’s film was chosen by Rino Soares, who will give us a short introduction to the film before it starts. The film is in Portuguese with English subtitles, and all are welcome. Cine Club will start at the usual time of 6pm, in the usual place of Hallward Library Screening Room (LG140). See you there!
