Good maths teachers have always needed to talk together about their work, share ideas and keep up with recent developments in maths education research. The University of Nottingham provides spaces for teachers and university tutors to come together to discuss professional development issues that are relevant to teachers within our partnership.
Maths Education Innovation Network
The network brings together teachers, maths leads, ITE colleagues, and researchers to explore prevalent, relevant and practical issues related to the teaching and learning of mathematics in primary, secondary, and post-16 settings. Each network session includes input on a prevalent teaching approach or issue, followed by opportunities for cross-phase collaboration to explore the implications of this approach / issue for classroom practice. Examples of topics explored are:
- what does it mean to teach for conceptual understanding?
- challenging student misconceptions through deliberate task design
- use of contexts and representations to reduce cognitive load in Maths lessons
- making the best of teaching from textbooks and schemes
- supporting transition from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3 by fostering curriculum and pedagogic continuity

Special Interest Group: Teaching Mathematics to Mixed Attainment Groups (TMMAG)
This group has arisen out of previous work groups funded by both East Midlands Maths Hubs. It provides a space for teachers to discuss mixed attainment teaching and is for those who are already working in this way with pupils or those who are interested in finding out more about how other schools have approached this. Teachers from any partnership school are welcome to be part of this group. This group meets termly, after school.
Please contact Mark Simmons for further information about this group.
