Introduction to the SIG
We are keen to offer partnership colleagues opportunities for subject specific continued professional development through engagement with our Science Interest Group (SIG).
SIG meetings are organised by a group of tutors, mentors and other education colleagues from within our school partnerships. Our meetings aim to create a space to discuss key issues and debates in science education and to foster a community of good practice within our partnership.
The intention of the SIG is to develop our collaborative understanding of science education, consider the current agendas and matters affecting science education, develop opportunities to improve engagement in science and promote subject specific research and scholarship across the partnership.
SIG format
SIGs will take place three times a year (approximately one per school term) on a weekday.
Meetings take place in person in the Dearing Building on Jubilee campus and are from 4.30–6pm. Parking is free on campus after 4pm and refreshments will be included at the SIG events.
They will encompass a range of formats including:
- Lectures by University of Nottingham and partnership colleagues
- Guest speakers
- Group exploration of current research and initiatives
- Open discussions and questions
- Activities considering implications for practice and best practice
Focus moving forward
We recognise that many teachers are particularly concerned with gaining knowledge, understanding and enhancement to support:
- Development of a more diverse and representative science curriculum
- Sustainability in education
- Developing subject knowledge when teaching out of specialism
- Science teacher recruitment and retention
