Research centres

Our four interdisciplinary research centres are an important way for us to:

• generate interdisciplinary research and impact projects
• secure funding for ongoing and future research
• help build collaborative networks across the University and with partners in the heritage, education and public sectors

This makes for a supportive and thriving research culture, where our staff and students can build their research portfolios and forge long-lasting collaborative relationships.

Centre for Research in Applied Linguistics (CRAL)

Dedicated to the study of language in real-world contexts, including medical settings, English language teaching, and business, legal, and public sector environments.

Centre for Literary Creativity, Community & Place (LCCP)

Bringing together researchers working on place and identity, writing and the local, regional and national literary cultures, cultural geographies, and literary recoveries.

Centre for the Study of the Viking Age (CSVA)

Advancing knowledge and understanding of the languages, literatures, history, and material and visual cultures of the Viking Age and its aftermath, in both Scandinavia and the Viking diaspora.

Institute for Name-Studies (INS)

The home for research into the origins and meanings of place-names and personal names. It provides resources for the study and analysis of place-names, which are used by historians, linguists, and geographers alike.

Research and reading groups

All four of our research centres house specialist research and/or reading groups, which provide further opportunities for research inquiry and collaboration.
