RLO: Stress Management for Healthcare Students on Clinical Placement

Stress Management for Healthcare Students on Clinical Placement

Stress and the student population

Research suggests that students in Higher Education experience significant mental distress. A National Union of Students survey in 2013 demonstrated that 80% of over 1300 students surveyed described experiencing stress. Of these, 20% experienced this stress more frequently than once a week. This is significant as stress may have an adverse effect on health and wellbeing, academic performance, and a student's ability to complete their studies.

For healthcare students, clinical practice placements have been associated with even higher levels of stress. Healthcare students must contend with the stressors associated with clinical placement, as well as the existing stressors of university life. This RLO will explore the stress that is associated with clinical placement, helping you to understand how you can identify it in yourself or others, and how you can manage it.
