Stress Management for Healthcare Students on Clinical Placement

What is Stress?

Stress is defined as the physical, mental and emotional human response to a particular stimulus, otherwise known as a 'stressor'.

Stress can be experienced as either negative or positive, depending on our response to a particular stressor and the situation. When we are exposed to mild or moderate stress, and have the perceived resources to deal with it, we can experience improved creativity, learning, efficiency at work and, eventually, a higher level of self-esteem that could lead us to be able to withstand higher stress levels in the future.

Stressors that are beyond our control or beyond our perceived resources may be perceived as unhelpful (negative) stress. All stimulus / stress has an holistic mind-body response…..impacting on and manifesting in physical, emotional and psychological signs and symptoms
