Student Midwife: Hi my name’s Olivia Swift and I’m in my final year of my degree in midwifery. I won’t pretend to you that it hasn’t been a struggle and any course at uni, particularly those in healthcare come with an abundance of ups and downs. When I first started I had no idea what to expect from placement and felt like a fish out of water. but trust me this does get better! With time you’ll become more familiar and experienced. At first you may feel like your mentor’s shadow but as you progress through the course you’ll begin to feel more like a healthcare professional.
Eventually you’ll be trusted to care for your own patients with minimal input from your mentor and be involved in confidence cases with fellow students to develop your autonomy. This makes you realise exactly why you’re doing the course, to develop relationships with women, clients or patients and go home knowing that you have made a difference. So although it’s tough now just focus on the positives and don't lose sight of your goals and what you want to achieve. As there’s no greater feeling than being thanked for your care and the difference you have made to an individual’s experience.
I hope this RLO has helped alleviate some current stressors or given insight into coping with forthcoming stressful periods.
Keep your head up And remember you are not alone, we’ve all been through it and keep sight of the finish line.
Thanks for listening.
