A risk factor is something that increases your chance of getting a disease. Some risk factors are modifiable; which means that you can do something about them.

The effect of many risk factors can be reduced if lifestyle changes are made.

The National Health Service (NHS) Long Term Plan outlined five key modifiable risk factors that cause premature death (listed to the right) that could be addressed to improve the health of the UK population.
