Research Fellow, Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences
After completing a BSc at the University of Leicester, Catherine gained insight into the NHS by answering a hospital complaints line, then into health research as a Graduate Trainee Lab Technician for the University of Leicester. These experiences motivated her to become a clinical scientist. She gained her MSc in Audiology from the University of Southampton and completed the BAAS Certificate of Audiological Competence, as the Trent Regional Trainee, at University Hospitals Nottingham. Catherine is a state-registered (HCPC) clinical scientist (Audiology) with experience of both adult and paediatric audiology and a special interest in cochlear implants. From 2000 until 2021 (barring a career break) she worked at Bradford Teaching Hospitals Foundation NHS Trust. She gained a PhD at the University of Nottingham in 2023, comparing outcomes for children with and without access to cochlear implantation. Her current role is Research Fellow on a multi-centre randomised clinical trial of cochlear implantation in adults with severe hearing loss who fall outside current NICE guidance for cochlear implantation. This project is a collaboration between the NIHR Nottingham Hearing Biomedical Research Centre and the Nottingham Clinical Trials Unit.

For deaf and hard-of-hearing people, it is very important to have access to the most appropriate technology. There is a need for stronger evidence to support patients and clinicians in making the best choices. To this end, Catherine's current research compares outcomes for adults and children using hearing aids to the outcomes of adults and children with cochlear implants.
Past research has focussed on monitoring deaf children's ability to benefit from listening with two cochlear implants.
