Biography

Steffi Thust is a Clinical Associate Professor in Neuroimaging at the University of Nottingham and Honorary Consultant at University Hospitals Nottingham NHS Trust. From 2014-2022 she was a Consultant in Diagnostic Neuroradiology and Clinical Lead for Neuro-Oncology Imaging at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London. Steffi holds an appointment as Honorary Associate Professor with University College London. She graduated with distinction from the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Germany and obtained her MD magna cum laude before completing radiology training at Guy's and St. Thomas' Hospitals and on the Pan-London Neuroradiology Fellowship. Steffi is a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy and a member of the British Society of Neuroradiologists Academic Subcommittee. Her research interests are the clinical translation of emerging imaging techniques and analysis methods to characterise, quantify and monitor brain diseases before and after treatment.

Steffi is a medical teacher, research supervisor, examiner and tutor at undergraduate and postgraduate level. This includes formal accreditation as a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy (FHEA). In addition, she holds a role as module lead and examiner for the largest UK advanced neuroimaging training programme. Steffi was previously panel convener for the Royal College of Radiologists Fellowship Examination Part 2A. She is currently the Training Lead for the Nottingham NIHR Biomedical Research Centre Precision Imaging and Magnetic Resonance theme.

Current Research

Co-investigator for Optimising Deuterium Magnetic Resonance for in vivo assessment of cerebral glycolytic flux in brain tumours (GlycoDMI Brain Tumour Study). This study aims to develop deuterium metabolic imaging protocols to measure the concentration time courses of substrates in malignant brain tumours, and assess biochemical flux through metabolic pathways.
