Biology, Chemistry & Maths - A Level
Why did you choose to come to Nottingham?
I chose Nottingham because when I came to the offer holder day, it felt like this was a place I could spend the next 3-4 years at. I loved the green scenery and the fact that the university was a campus university but still so close to the city centre. Also, Nottingham wasn’t too far from home but it was far enough.
Why did you choose to study Natural Sciences?
I chose Natural Sciences because I liked the option of continuing on with the three subjects that I studied at A-level. I was also too indecisive to choose between biology and chemistry.
What were you worried about when starting university?
I was concerned about taking maths as I hadn’t done Further Maths A-level and I was worried I would struggle as I did find even just A2 maths a challenge. It was helpful to find out not everyone had done further maths and my peer mentors in first year told them to come to them for help if I ever needed it which was reassuring and useful to have if I ever needed it.
What aspect of the course do you enjoy most and why?
I’ve enjoyed the wide variety of content I have learnt but still focusing on certain areas such as Cancer Biology which was a third-year module and it interested me so much that I chose to do a Masters project in Cancer biology.
What do you do outside of the course and how has this impacted your university experience?
I volunteered for the Welcome Mentors scheme in my 4th year and this was an incredible experience as I got to help the first years settle into university life and I also made friends through the scheme as well.
I also was on the Natural Sciences Society committee and played IMS netball for three years throughout my university career. Netball helped me stay active and meet new people in different years.
What are you thinking about doing when you finish?
I’m hoping to apply for a job as a Research Assistant, where I would be assisting researchers in the lab. I would like to somehow have an impact on cancer research in the future so maybe a PhD in Cancer biology but that wouldn’t be for a few years as I would also like to have a year off to travel as there’s so many places I would like to see.
How has your course helped you realise these plans?
Natural Sciences has helped me realise that I want to work in a lab as I think I would hate an office job and I have really enjoyed labs this year in my MSci project. I feel like even though I’m doing the same protocol every week, the results can differ each time and that’s the exciting part of working in a lab, nothing will ever be the same.
I also think, Natural Sciences has made me want to travel as after seeing my best friend have the year of her life in Australia on her year abroad makes me want to travel and see more of the world.
